What is World Suicide Prevention Day?
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was started in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO). Its objective is to spread one single message; that suicide can be prevented. This message is shared with national organisations, governments and the general public all over the world. Today, WSPD is recognised in over 60 countries worldwide, with a wide array of events for people to get involved with.
Why is it Important?
The most recent suicide statistics showed that more than 6,800 people died by suicide in the UK and Republic of Ireland in 2018. Every single life lost to suicide is a tragedy, as suicide is preventable. It’s important that governments and organisations do all that they can to stop suicide and help raise awareness of how we can all support each other.
What is this Year’s Theme?
This year (2022), the theme is Creating Hope Through Action. This is an empowering message that aims to give people the confidence to take action. It highlights how important it is for us to share experiences together, and support one another – particularly those in pain.
How Can I Get Involved?
There are a multitude of ways that you can help get involved and spread awareness of suicide prevention on WSPD. For instance, you can participate in the Cycle Around the Globe event, which runs from September 10th to October 10th. This is a free, virtual event, and you can take part by cycling any distance on the road, track or gym – showing your support for suicide prevention.
Another way to get involved is to light a candle on September 10th. Lighting a candle is a way to give support to suicide prevention, remember lost loved ones, and survivors of suicide. All across the world, people will be coming together to light a candle at 8pm on this date. If you’d like to find out more about getting involved – visit the IASP site today.
